Greeters and Sidespeople; Coffee Hosts and Nursery Volunteers

A greeter is the face of Holy Cross at serviices. Greeters do just that: they extend a welcoming hand to everyine arriving at a service, whether visitor, newcomer or "regular". As a greeter you would make sure everyone receives any help they may need, such as with coats or canes.  They may also assist the sidespeople as required. Greeters usually work in teams of two, and help out not only on Sunday mornings but on other special services as well. Couples or a child and parent team are especially welcome! If you are interested in finding out out more or signing up, please speak to a greeter next Sunday at church, or email here.

Sidespeople also greet people, but they also do other things. They make sure everyone has a seat, help out anyone with a physical need, hand out bulletins and prayerbooks, and keep a count of people attending the service. They also put the hymn numbers up on the board before the start of each service. They also make sure everything is safe. Sidespeople also receive offerings and present them at the altar, and bring the bread and wine to the altar at Communion services. If you are interested in finding out out more or signing up, please speak to a sidesperson next Sunday at church, or email here.

Coffee and refreshments are served at a fellowship time following each Sunday's 10 a.m. service, and also following some other special services. Each week four or so volunteers make and serve coffee, tea and juice plus baked goods, and clean up afterwards. If you are interested in finding out out more or signing up, please speak to a coffee host next Sunday at church, or email here.

Nursery Volunteers: Holy Cross has a room fitted out for taking care of infants, but people are needed to relieve the parents! You will usually find a sing-up sheet in the narthex (the main entryway), but you can also contact the coordinator via email here.

Altar Guild and Flower Arrangers

Membership in the Altar Guild is by the Rector's invitation, but you may certainly express an interest by speaking to Reverend Kyle or emailing him here. Prospective members learn their roles and work with supervision for a year before becoming full members. Members of the altar guild are communicants who attend regularly. They work in teams of three, and try to have seven teams on the roster. The responsibility of the Altar Guild is to care for the Sanctuary, the part of the church containing the altar. Each week the team on duty cleans and prepares for the services that week by polishing the holy vessals and washing and ironing the linens. They also deliver the altar flowers to shut-ins or parish members with a particular event to celebrate, following the Sunday service. The team on duty is also responsible for preparing the Sanctuary for funerals, weddings, baptisms, confirmations or any other special services that week.

Three times a year (Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas) all members work together to decorate the church for the festival services. The fourth Sunday of each month the members gather at 8:00 to take Communion together and follow it with breakfast at a local restaurant.

Flower arrangers prepare bouquets for display at the altar each Sunday. If you have a talent this way please talk to an arranger next Sunday or to a member of the Altar Guild (they will be found cleaning the Sanctuary after each service!), or email them here.

If you wish to donate flowers in memory or thanksgiving, there is a sign-up sheet in the narthex, ro speak to a sidesperson. The dedication and donation ($40) may be put into the collection plate or left at the Church Office.

Although both Altar Guild members and Flower Arrangers are by tradition women and girls, there is nothing requiring that only women have these roles.

Altar Servers and Communion Administrants

Serving at the altar is a great place to learn about the liturgy and traditions of the Anglican Church. Both the young and not so young are servers at Holy Cross. Servers help the priest and deacon in performing their duties, and they lead processions bearing a cross (these leaders are called "crucifers" (cross-bearers) or candles.

If you would like to join the Server's group please contact one of the clergy in person of by email, or leave your name in the Church Office.

At each service, people are needed to administer the Communion Cup. These Administrants are a group of a dozen confirmed members chosen by the Rector and agreed to by the Vestry. The Rector applies to the Biship to license these people for a three-year term. This term is rotated so that each year four new people replace those whose term is at an end. Training sessions are conducted. If you are interested, please contact the Rector.

Leading Prayers of the People and Prayers for the Parish

We have a very dedicated group of parishioners who off the prayers of the people during the 10 a.m. service each week. These people, also called Intercessors, prepare their own script using prayers in the Book of Common Prayer, Book of Alternative Services, or other resources. They use the regular cycles of prayer (printed in the Bulletin each week) for other parts of teh church, the world, Holy Cross' parishioners and organizations, and those who have asked for our prayers. If you are a communicant memebr and have a gift for intercessory prayer, leadership and speaking in public, you would be a good candidate for this ministry. Training is conducted each year.  If you would like to become part of this group, please speak to the Rector or email him here.

If you have a gift for prayer but not for public leading, you might like to participate in prayers for the parish and parishioners that takes place between the services each Sunday, in the Children's Chapel. These prayers can be silent or in a group depending on who is present and their desires. Prayers are offered for everyone connected with Holy Cross, especially for those taking part in the services that day, in whatever capacity. It is not necessary to sign up, simply come to the Children's Chapel about 9:00 each Sunday.

Scripture Readers

Members of the Readers' Ministry read the first and second lessons at the 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. Sunday services, at the Wednesday 9:30 a.m. service, and at special services. The roster is scheduled each three months according to availability: you sign up for a service individually, not for both services on a Sunday. Parishioners who are faithful in the reading and study of scripture and public speaking may want to become part of this ministry of proclamation. Training sessions are held yearly. If you are interested, please speak to a reader after the service, or contact the coordinator via email here.
