Meet the Music Director

Allan Bevan has been Music Director at Holy Cross since 1998. To get to know more about his music, and listen to some compositions, please connect to his website.

Allan Bevan has been described as “an extremely talented composer of ravishing sacred choral music” by The American Organist and as a “composer [who] obviously understands and is able to write for the voice in an uncanny fashion” by The Choral Room.

Allan Bevan (b. 1951, Toronto, Canada) is a graduate of the School of Music, the University of Windsor, and holds a Mmus degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Alberta and a PhD in Composition from the University of Calgary. His choral music has won awards in many national and international choral composition events. Dr. Bevan has been commissioned by some of Canada's finest choirs.

Choir, Cantors and Soloists

The choir is Holy Cross' main musical organization, and meets on Thursday evenings for rehearsals (7:45-8:45). The choir provides musical leadership for hymns and liturgical music, and has a varied repertoire of anthems. Once a month the choir enjoys a post-rehearsal fellowship event.

Current membership is twenty singers. The choir welcomes people of all ages and walks of life, united by the common love of singing God's praise in a traditional Anglican setting. There is space for new memebrs in all sections of the choir and interested people are invited to contact the Music Director.

The choir sings at most 10 am services from September through Pentecost, and at occasional evening services and Christmas Eve. The choir is especially busy in Holy Week, participating in the Tenebrae, Maundy Thursday and leading in the Good Friday Service.

The choir has an active ministry at memorial and funeral services. Singers who are unable to attend choir regularly are welcome to participate as occasional members by expressing an interest and adding their names to our contact list. Contact the Music Director.

Cantors chant the psalms at the weekly 10 am services and occasionally at other times. They are usually choir members.

Many opportunities exist for soloists or smaller vocal ensembles.

What are ringers and who can get involved?

Holy Cross owns a four-octave set of Suzuki tone-chimes, and a new set of fourteen Schulmerich handbells. Our current inter-generational ringing group meets for Tuesday evening rehearsals 7-8 p.m., mid-September to mid-June.

The ringers often accompany the choir and congregation in anthems, hymns and concerts, and present preludes and postludes on a regular basis at the 10am service and at some evening services.

Instrumental Music

Facilities: Holy Cross owns a Kawai grand piano and a two-manual Allen Renaissance digital organ, both of which were installed in 2005. Tone chimes and handbells,m plus a variety of percussion instruments, are also used in our music.

Holy Cross makes its sanctuary and musical instruments available to the wider community for student recitals and touring groups. Please contact the Music Director.

Instrumentalists: Holy Cross is fortunate to have many talented instrumentalists who contribute to our services. These include woodwind, brass, keyboard and guatar (classical and folk) players. You are invited to share your talents!
