Becoming a Stephen Minister

If you are a compassionate person and a good listener, please consider becoming a Stephen Minister. In Galatians 6, Paul tells us to:

"...carry each other's burdens and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ."

Holy Cross has been enrolled with the Stephen Ministry program for seven years. Training classes are held at Holy Cross and are led by the Stephen Leader. Ideally we require four participants to form a class. If there are less than four people who would like to take the training, we are able to place them in other Anglican Churches that also have classes. We also share our leaders with other parishes when there is a need.

Textbooks and other educational resources are provided by our Church. Classes are held for 2 1/2 hours, once a week for 20 weeks. Some of the topics covered are:

  • The Art of Listening
  • Distinctively Christian Caring
  • Assertiveness
  • Boundaries in Care giving
  • Confidentiality, and
  • Ministering to Those Experiencing Grief.

When the courses has been completed, the new Stephen Ministers are commissioned in a moving ceremony, during a regular Church service.

For more details, contact the Stephen Leader, Marvel Miller.
